An obscure Texas funk band from the late 1960s and early '70s, Mickey and the Soul Generation would likely have remained completely unknown had it not been for noted funk fiend and crate digger DJ Shadow, who unearthed a copy of their "Iron Leg" single and set out to track down the members and re-release the group's material. The end result is Iron Leg: The Complete Mickey and the Soul Generation, a two-disc compilation put out by Cali-Tex/Quannum Projects in early 2003. A smoking collection of dirty drums, soulful horn blasts, chunky basslines, wah-wah guitars, and vibrant organ jams, the album also features various demo takes and live recordings. Top-shelf instrumental funk in the same vein as Stones Throw's Funky 16 Corners compilation. |
