While not as well known as many other Roots singers of the '70s, Prince Alla released a series of cuts that stand with the best of the era. "Stone" and "Bucket Bottom" were excellent, urgent Rasta cuts on the Freedom Sounds label; the classic backing unit Soul Syndicate delivered extremely solid rhythms. Prince Alla's voice is high and smooth, and wouldn't sound out of place on an early American Soul recording. He spent his early years in the Rock Steady group the Leaders, though a stay in a Rasta camp in the '60s changed his direction to a more conscious style. These days Prince Alla cleans fish in Greenich Farm, Jamaica, occasionally visiting the recording studio. Hopefully he'll realize what an audience he could have if he went on tour. |
