Admission only $2.00 if you mention GEMM.com!!! Nashville, TN, was a great show! Larger room and many customers. V-DISCS from WWII..are all cataloged!! (all 6 boxes of them)are now listed!!! V-Discs were made for use by our armed forces during the 1940’s. The program was in effect from October 1943 to May 1949. These 12-inch 78 rpm recordings allowed six and one-half minutes of programming per side as opposed to three and one-quarter minutes on commercially available 10-inch recordings. As I understand it, the recorded materials came from several sources, namely live “new” studio recordings, copies of commercially recorded versions, original “alternate takes,” and dubs from live recordings. Most of the records were pressed on vinylite, however, the pressings from the Columbia Record Company were of the older, heavier shellac material. Soon new materials called Formar or Alvar were used. V-Disc labels included “War Department – Music Section,” “Army—Navy—Marine Corps—Coast Guard,” “Navy Department,” and “Special Services U.S. M.C.” For additional information, see the Richard Sears reference book, V-Discs: A History and Discography Also, visit us on FACEBOOK!
